A HARD-FOUGHT VICTORY
30JUNE,KUCHING: Kuching City FC (KCFC) created upset by beating title contender Selangor FC (SFC) 2-1 in the FA Cup quarterfinals 1st leg which was played at Stadium Negeri, Kuching last night. The match was played in a wet pitch, no thanks to the heavy storm which hit Kuching since evening.
It was all the homesters from the beginning of the match in search for an early lead but the slippery pitch effected both teams with their passes going astray and players fell repeatedly. However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 31 minutes through their Chilean import, Ronnie Fernandez who capitalized from a rebound of the goalpost to put his team in the lead. Aidil Sharin boys did not give up and their resilience paid off before the half time whistle with captain James Okuwosa scoring from close range after a free kick which Selangor FC failed to clear. The game ended 1-1 in the 1st half.
After the breather, both teams continue to play attacking football in search for a goal but both of the team defense stood firm to deny the strikers. In the 64 minutes, a back pass from a Selangor FC defender was quickly intercept by Kuching City Ghanaian striker Jordan Mintah who easily slotted in the ball to the net beating Selangor FC goalkeeper to give the home side the lead.
Selangor FC up the tempo after the goal in search for an equaliser but the home side defense led by Okuwosa thwarted any attacking threat by Nidzam Jamil boys to maintain and preserve their lead until the final whistle was blown by the referee.
Selangor FC still have a chance to overcome Kuching City FC slim lead when they meet in the 2nd leg on 6 July in Selangor.
